The latest English Housing Survey has found that renters spend more on their homes every month than home owners.
Renters spend 31% of their household income on rent every month whilst those who own homes spend just 18%.
Outside of London the average cost to rent is £809 per month. The average per week in the UK is £198 a week, compared to weekly mortgage costs which are £174 a week.
In England, one in five people live in rented homes. In London, this increases to 27%. The data also found that younger people are more likely to rent. 65% of people in rented homes are under 45.
